living | simple resolutions

simple resolutions... Welcome 2011! May this new year bring us each much joy, laughter, health, and good fortune.

As The Kinks "Better Things" cranks in the background, I type, optimistic for the year ahead. I'm normally not a resolution-making kinda gal, but this year I thought I'd toss out some loose goals. Goals that will help me to stop for a moment and revel in life's simple pleasures.

My first goal is to finally make real use of my cookbook collection. I have built up a rather healthy reference section of over 200 cookbooks. So, rather than quickly google-ing my recipe fancy in mere seconds, I will let my fingers do the walking and sit with a stack of cookbooks and flip until I spot my desire. Will it be fast? Absolutely not. But paired with a hot cup of tea and a comfy chair, and well, you have the makings of a rather pleasant way to spend a half hour.

Secondly, I'm going to enjoy the everyday things a bit more. There is a long and treasured story that goes along with my beloved Mauviel copper cookware set, but I shall save that for another day. Simply put, this coveted set nested in a wooden crate in my storage room for years... yes, years! I was saving it for special occasions. Not anymore. I broke that crate and moved the set upstairs. Today it is my everyday cookware. It weighs an absolute ton, but it makes cooking even scrambled eggs a joy. Treasures shall now be used and enjoyed, rather than gazed upon.

Lastly, I'd like to become more unplugged. I'm on the computer all day at work and I often hop on again at night while at home, but I find that this same loved technology is taking my attention away from some other beloved activities like reading, garden planning, etc... It is just too easy to flock to it, so I need to not even turn it on. I haven't figured out my exact game plan as of yet for this, but it's in the works.

These are pretty simple resolutions. I've taken the time to spend years outside soaking in nature's bounty that's right in my own backyard. It's about time that I attempt to do the same in my own living room.

Best wishes to each of you for a fabulous 2011!

How fun that you have beautiful French cookware! Breaking it out and using it for simple things like eggs is a great idea. I agree with you about computers. They really take away valuable time (which is why I'm going to close now). Happy New Year to you and your family. I'm so glad we got to know each other this year!

Your resolutions are thoughtful and important...such great goals. I also want to try to unplug more. I've become too consumed lately! Thank you for sharing with me...your blog always reminds me to step back and to savor the beauty in the world around me.

Welcome back and best wishes to you in the New Year. Sunday is my NO COMPUTER day - or at least I try not to turn it on. The best thing I ever did was to cancel cable tv. I am so glad you are using your cookware. It sounds beautiful and I am certain you will cook marvelous eats with it.

I think unplugging is good...I find myself reading and loving reading far too many blogs...but...I think I have to take the unplugging slowly...

I love the cookbook resolution! Google sure makes us lazy, in a way. I support the getting unplugged resolution, as long as you don't abandon your lovely blog!

alright, truth be told, my foray into unplugging needs a little more will power, but i have the faith that i'll get there.

we've been cable-free for a while now and i don't miss it a bit. mind you, i do not particularly enjoy wrestling with rabbit ears on a daily basis, but i have a new found appreciation for taking the time to listen to NPR for more things than news and Car Talk.

hope you each have a lovely week!
