living | happy new year's

happy new year... With glad tidings, we welcome the arrival of 2010. I've never been much of a resolution person, but I always do take time at the end of each year to reflect upon what has transpired in the past twelve months. Though we've all had better years, I relish in taking fortune in the smaller things.
It's so funny sometimes how certain things that we used to completely by-pass are now our cherished possessions. I'm reminded of this each Christmas as I decorate our tree. The ornaments shown above were my father's. I remember cringing at the sight of these ornaments when my father would hang them on the tree. He'd always insist on hanging them, and we'd always make sure he'd hang them in the back of the tree out of eye sight. Compared to all of our other ornaments, these glass orbs seemed so dated and worn. Sadly, my father is no longer here to hang them on the tree. But it is with great pleasure and pride that I now don them onto my family's tree, smack dab in the front where everyone can see them. Their value is priceless in memory alone.

So with this new decade, I gladly close the book on the past ten years and happily look forward to the days ahead. May they be filled with laughter and much love for each of you. Happy New Year!!

My dad also had "hideous" ornaments from the 1950's that he insisted on using. Now they're considered vintage and they're expensive. I love the old funny ornaments now. No longer ugly.

I hope you and yours had a wonderful holiday season. Happy New Year!

"May we let the old year go with grace and welcome the new with hope. Wishing you true success in 2010 at what is nearest to your heart."(RT@redcloverstudio)

I read this yesterday on Twitter & it immediately became my favourite New Year's greeting.

Happy New Year, Allison.

I agree with you about vintage ornmanents -- they are my favourite because they tell stories.

Happy New Year and may we all have a better year than last year. Your story hit my heart. What beautiful ornaments. My dad passed away on Dec. 28, 2005, and I miss him dearly. He just loved Christmas. So I make sure I hang everything on the tree or around the house that he gave me. One of the most precious items is the Nativity Scene with a light in it that he had when I was a child. It is over 45 years old now that I know of. You are right we all push on but the memories are always living in our hearts. Best to you in 2010.

Very touching about your father's (now your) ornaments. I think they are beautiful. All the very best to you too in the New Year! Happy 2010!

it is funny how the things you treasure most are usually the items that wouldn't mean much to anyone else but you. i think of my grandmother's rolling pin that sits above my door frame, or my dad's fishing creole that hangs right above my monitor. they probably look like garage sale fodder to anyone else, but they are two of my most precious assets.
happy new year to each of you!
