garden | four season gardening in maine

december harvest... So, I never really thought that the two items I am about to mention, would ever fall together in the same day, but they do today. This morning we went down to Thompson's Orchards and picked out the perfect Christmas tree. As my husband was busy lugging the tree into our house, I was out in the garden with Jackson harvesting the last of the brussel sprouts, broccoli, and carrots. What??? I'm still harvesting vegetables into December... in Maine? This is something new for me. Something I strived for, but not one that I expected to continue until this late into the year. We have had a very mild late fall, so that's probably the biggest contributing factor. In fact, our first real snowfall of the season is suppose to come tonight. Prior to that, we only got a mere dusting back in the beginning of November.
To celebrate this delightful last harvest, tonight I'll just toss them a bit in some extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt, and cracked black pepper. Then roast them up at a very high heat (500ºF) for around 12-15 minutes. I'm going to mix them with some gemelli pasta and toasted pine nuts and finish with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and kosher salt. I cannot wait!

Mnn That broccoli looks scrumptious. The idea of harvesting food from the garden in December is new for me too. Up here in the Frozen North October is the limit for root crops and even them you might have to hack through the soil with a pickaxe.

delicious sounding dinner. We're still plucking up sprouts and keeping our fingers crossed that some may survive until christmas. Enjoy putting up your tree :o)

That sounds good to me!
It's been the same here in the UK with a mild, although extremely wet, autumn and the first real ground frost only earlier this week. Flighty xx

How lovely to still be enjoying a garden harvest in December.

I've been away from blog-reading for the past 3 weeks. One of my weekend treats, besides enjoy the sunshine, will be to catch up on your blog posts. I have to be honest -- I came for a quick visit about 10 days ago and know there's an amazing French toast recipe to be admired...and tried.

Those veggies look so good! Are you growing them under some kind of protection, Eliot Coleman style, or did you harvest these from open garden beds? -Jean

This late harvest is the best for the veggies you mention all taste better after a bit of chill... Certainly the deer believe so and munch mine down to the ground this time of year. Lovely photos!
