garden | first snow of the season

the first snow of the season... I left for work this morning before the sun came up. It was black out, but there was a heaviness to the air. An hour later, my husband called. I could barely hear him above the two screaming banshees who were shouting with glee "IT'S SNOWING!" I ran outside to catch a glimpse for myself and indeed the white flakes of winter have arrived.
I know that Brussel Sprouts need a hard frost to develop their finest flavor, but snow? I didn't expect this snowy present or else I would have taken some preventative matters to help protect the late fall veggies I was just boasting about in this week's earlier post.
These little fellows are still so tiny, but I am tempted to bring in the entire plants (complete with clumps of dirt still attached to their roots) and test keeping them in my root cellar until Thanksgiving. The going lifespan for storage is usually two weeks, but we'll see.

My Brussels sprouts have survived several hard frosts and about 2 inches of snow twice this year. I bet yours will do just fine outside unless/until the ground freezes. They rebound incredibly fast from the freeze and keep growing...it's like a miracle.

welcome greenmtngirl! thanks so much for stopping on by and sharing your good news about your sprouts. my goal is to harvest them for Thanksgiving Day, so i'll keep them right where they are and hope they'll squeak through until then.
