life cycle | indian pipe

life cycle | indian pipe... The Indian Pipe was one of those hidden gems that existed in my yard for years I'm sure, but I only became aware of this summer. When I first spotted some growing by our compost, I thought it was a kind of mushroom until I took a closer look. These spooky, milky white wildflowers emerge as clusters across the forest floor. After several weeks, its petals drop off, revealing the cone of its seed pod. As the plant fades out, it changes to black and hardens into twig-like sticks.

I believe I have seen these before and simply passed them by. Thank you for awakening me to their beauty and now I will watch after them more closely.
