life cycle | ferns

life cycle | ferns... One of my favorite things about where I live are the variety of ferns that populate our woods. Ferns are the first signs of life that peek out once the snows of winter melt. With the grace of a dancer, these beautiful fronds slowly emerge from their shell-like cocoons and unfurl to an outstretch of elegance.

Some are covered in a web-like fur, others, like the Ostrich fern (shown directly above and below), have a papery-like covering. These particular ferns are actually a very popular delicacy in Maine called Fiddleheads. People scour roadsides and woods each spring hoping to bring home a bag of these delicious treats.

As the fern begins to unwind, you get to take a glimpse of the thousands of tiny spore-like circles that make up the fronds. As the fronds grow and develop, these circles fade away into the make-up of the plant.

As fall commences, each variety of fern changes to a different Autumnal hue. All along our stone walls, ferns of yellow, orange, and red slowly begin to curl towards itself.

What remains, long after the fronds have faded are various legacies. Above is my favorite. These pods will remain standing tall and proud throughout winter, only to be covered by next spring's crop.

This beautiful post deserves to be 'picked' on Blotanical. As there is no Post Title, Blotanical doesn't assign it to picks, even though it shows up in the list.

Does that matter to you? If it is your intention not to have your posts picked, then I do apologize for butting in. Blotanical is kind of hard to figure out, in the beginning.
